Int'l Handball Federation: World Cup Media Rights Reports Unfounded

The IHF said in a statement that the German media is generally well informed and passes the information to the public in a fair way. In view of the 2017 Men’s Handball World Championships in France, the German public has been provided with partly incorrect information on crucial conditions of the TV rights awarding. The TV cooperation between Int'l Handball Federation and beIN Sports has been presented by the media as a deal concluded on grounds of alleged personal, in particular, financial interests. The media coverage is accompanied by partly unacceptable, reputation-damaging allegations which are completely unfounded. Some media failed to find actual facts and to consult the IHF or beIN Sports. The IHF was informed by beIN Sports that deals have been agreed upon with a number of public service broadcasters across Europe without any issue. These licensed broadcasters have put measures in place to minimize overspill into surrounding territories. It should also be confirmed that German national broadcasters had every opportunity to acquire the rights. The IHF incorporated the obligation to broadcast the World Championships in the so-called big handball nations including Germany -- online or on TV -- in the contract with beIN Sports. Thus, the possibility of broadcasting the World Championships in Germany is guaranteed according to the contract (IHF). The IHF's statement is available here.
