Three years after arriving at the Lawn Tennis Association, MICHAEL DOWNEY has resigned as CEO and will “return to his previous position as head of Tennis Canada once his notice period has expired in July.” There are "understood to be personal reasons behind Downey’s decision," which took the LTA offices in Roehampton "by surprise." Downey has “not been an unalloyed success in the role, but the public perception of British tennis is on the up thanks to an unprecedented period of success on the world tours” (London TELEGRAPH, 1/12).
COACHES/MANAGERS: League Championship side Rotherham United appointed former goalkeeper MIKE POLLITT as goalkeeping coach, replacing ANDY DIBBLE. The 44-year-old will work alongside ex-teammate and caretaker Manager PAUL WARNE (BBC, 1/12). ... After almost 16 years at the helm of the Brazilian men’s volleyball team, coach BERNARDO ROCHA DE REZENDE, known as Bernardinho, left the position on Wednesday. He took over the men’s team in May '01, and "in recent years he has scored more than thirty titles as coach for the men’s team." The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) named former national team player RENAN DAL ZOTTO as Bernardinho's replacement (THE RIO TIMES, 1/12). ... League Two side Notts County appointed former EPL side West Ham player KEVIN NOLAN its new coach after former Tottenham Manager HARRY REDKNAPP "turned down the chance" to manage the club. Notts County sacked JOHN SHERIDAN at the beginning of the month "in an attempt to find a man who can steer them away from the drop" (THE SUN, 1/12).
