Argentine FA To Elect New President On April 28 After FIFA Intervenes

FIFA and the Argentine FA Normalization Committee agreed that an AFA presidential election will be held on April 28, "with a new statute to be approved before then," according to GOAL. After 50 assembly members -- mostly from lower divisions, plus six from the top flight -- last week voted for an extraordinary assembly to be held Feb. 15, FIFA "intervened and established a new timetable" (GOAL, 1/9). In Buenos Aires, Alejandro Casar González reported the AFA's new statute will be delivered to all Argentine football clubs on Jan. 23, "and they will have until Feb. 6 to make objections." The Normalization Committee will schedule an assembly to "reform the statute on March 14." An "important point" is that the election "will have to be carried out using FIFA criteria, meaning candidates will have to pass" the FIFA and CONMEBOL integrity test. There "will also be 15 candidates who join the AFA's new council." Previously, there were more than 40 members of the AFA exec committee (LA NACION, 1/9).
