Finance Notes: Brighton & Hove Albion Fined For Paying Less Than Minimum Wage

League Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion is among 687 companies that have been fined a total of almost £1.4M ($1.71M) for paying staff less than the minimum wage. The fine is on top of the £3.5M ($4.3M) in wages that the companies "have had to repay to staff since the government started to crack down on offenders" in '13. There have been 10 rounds of "naming and shaming since then." The offenders include League Two side Blackpool and Wimbledon restaurant San Lorenzo, which has been a favorite of Boris Becker (LONDON TIMES, 1/7).

A "run of victories for the Premier League’s top teams is expected to hammer signs of recovery" at "troubled" bookmaker William Hill and "kick off a year of pain for gambling companies." William Hill, which has been without a permanent CEO since last summer, "is expected to lament a dismal December when it updates the market" on Monday. The company said late last year that it "expected to report full-year earnings at the top end of its guidance" of £260M ($318.3M)-£280M ($342.8M). However, "since the heavy losses last month, City bankers and analysts say the forecasts are now likely to come in at the lower end of the range" (SUNDAY TIMES, 1/8).
