Finance Notes: Uganda National Football Team Facing Financial Crisis

The Uganda Cranes are "facing a financial crisis" as the team embarks on its 2017 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Gabon -- the team's first appearance at the finals in 39 years. Uganda FA Head of Finance Decolas Kiiza said that they are "still waiting for a cash-advance which the Ugandan government had promised to give them." He said, "We made a budget of $2,122,909 and after consultations and meetings with officials from the Ministry of Education & Sport and the National Council of Sports, the budget was slashed to $1,226,855. But that money has not come as yet." Uganda State Minister for Sports Charles Bakkabulindi said that the FA will "have to wait" for its advance until Minister of Education & Sports Janet Museveni -- who is also the First Lady -- responds to "the budget details which he has forwarded to her" (BBC, 12/27).

Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv's "moment of truth" arrives on Tuesday, with its future to be determined at the Tel Aviv District Court rather than on the pitch. Hapoel is in "serious danger of going into administration after the Tel Aviv District Court approved earlier this month a request for a stay of legal proceedings" due to debts estimated at over 100M Israeli new shekels ($26M). The trustees were given until Tuesday to "present the court with a new potential owner to replace Amir Kabiri" (J POST, 12/27).
