League Notes: Sochi May 'Claim Compensation' For Losing World Championships

Russia "could claim compensation after the 2017 Bobsleigh & Skeleton World Championships were moved from Sochi." The Int'l Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation decided not to hold the February event in Russia "after more details emerged of alleged state-sponsored doping in the country." Senior Russian politician Valentina Matviyenko said that Sochi may have a claim for "material and moral damages." She said, "We could file a lawsuit on reimbursement of expenses" (BBC, 12/14).

New Zealand Rugby will introduce random out-of-competition testing for recreational drugs from next season, "not only for players but for coaches and administrators too." The testing regime was agreed on Wednesday "as part of a collective agreement between NZR and the New Zealand Rugby Players Association." Players have previously been tested "only on game days but the agreement will mean all players and others involved in New Zealand’s top competitions being subject to random testing" (London GUARDIAN, 12/14).

The Korean government "failed to find overwhelming evidence to prove the allegations that the Korea Equestrian Federation extended special treatment to Chung Yoo-ra, a dressage competitor and daughter of Choi Soon-sil, President Park Geun-hye's confidant and the center of the influence-peddling scandal." An inspection by the sports ministry and the Korean Olympic Committee aimed to "look into suspicions regarding Chung's acceptance onto the national team for the 2014 Asian Games and any special treatment given to her." After the inspection, the ministry said that it would "take disciplinary action against officials who issued fake documents and violated regulations, as well as Chung" (KOREA TIMES, 12/14).
