Media Notes: Russian Members Of Parliament Attempt To Block FIFA 17

A group of Russian members of Parliament "asked the government's communications oversight agency to possibly block" Electronic Arts video game FIFA 17 after the franchise promoted a tie-in with a U.K.-based LGBT rights group. FIFA 17 has "lots of connections" to the EPL but "the Russian MPs' beef with the title stems from EA's support of the Rainbow Laces campaign, in which the league partnered with LGBT rights group Stonewall to fight homophobia and transphobia" at matches in the U.K. Even though the Rainbow Laces tie-in ended in November, the MPs claim "the game is in violation" of a '13 law that outlaws the promotion of non-traditional relationships because they could bring "harm to children's health and development" (ENGADGET, 12/6).

Eurosport has "won Boris Becker as an expert and co-commentator for its live tennis coverage." The six-time Grand Slam winner will analyze the Australian Open exclusively for the sports channel's German viewers on free-to-air TV from Jan. 16-29. Becker will "focus on the stories surrounding the national and international tennis" players, including last year's winner Angelique Kerber, and accompany the main games as a co-commentator. In the U.K., Becker is already known as a TV "expert." Since '03, he has been analyzing the Wimbledon tennis tournament for the BBC on a "regular basis" (BROADBAND TV NEWS, 12/7).

The Mercedes Formula 1 team has placed a "humorous" classified ad in the pages of the U.K.’s "Autosport" magazine for the vacant position of "race driver." Following the "shock" announcement by recently-crowned F1 World Champion Nico Rosberg, the ad says, "A vacancy has arisen for the position of race driver with the team." AMG Petronas Mercedes F1 "routinely" places ads in "Autosport" magazine for vacant positions within its team but this is the first time it has ever published one for its race driver (MOTORSPORT, 12/7).
