Yelena Isinbayeva Appointed To Chair New Supervisory Board Of RUSADA

Former Olympic pole vault Gold Medalist Yelena Isinbayeva has been appointed "to chair the new supervisory board of the Russian anti-doping agency, which is struggling to recover its reputation after repeated doping scandals," according to the AAP. The agency, known as RUSADA, said in a statement on Wednesday that "Isinbayeva would head a 10-person board" including sports execs, academics and a Russian sports ministry official. Isinbayeva was part of the Russian athletics team which was banned from the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for widespread drug use, though "she has not been accused of any wrongdoing." Isinbayeva's appointment "could cause tension" with the World Anti-Doping Agency, which she has "sharply" criticized, saying its accusations against Russia are unproven, and calling for athlete-turned-whistleblower Yulia Stepanova to be banned for life. Isinbayeva said, "The effectiveness with which that fight (against doping) will be carried out in Russia depends on when RUSADA gets back its compliance" (AAP, 12/8). The BBC's Karolos Grohmann reported Former Switzerland President Samuel Schmid has "taken over an International Olympic Committee investigation into doping" at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics after French Judge Guy Canivet resigned. Canivet was appointed earlier this year to lead the IOC probe after revelations of "widespread doping in Russia and systematic cheating" during the 2014 Games by Russian athletes, who were allegedly helped by the country's secret service. IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said Canivet had stepped down for "strong personal reasons." Adams added that Canivet offered to remain at the IOC's service and "give advice whenever needed." The 69-year-old Schmid is a former president of the Swiss Confederation and ex-head of the federal council in charge of the army, population and sport (BBC, 12/6).
