BeIN Sports To Sublicense World Handball Championship Rights In France

BeIN Sports has "decided to sublicense" its French media rights to the men’s and women’s World Handball Championship quarterfinals through the finals to a free-to-air channel, according to Sacha Nokovitch of L’ÉQUIPE. For the 2015 World Championship in Qatar, beIN Sports was “content to resell the co-broadcast rights” of the men's semifinals and finals to TF1. The semifinal drew 3.3 million viewers for TF1, and the final drew 12.6 million viewers for the channel. For the ’17 competition, beIN Sports has “put two offers on the market.” The first -- a legal obligation -- is the final “in the case of France participating.” The second includes the quarterfinals and the semifinals if France qualifies, as well as the final, “but only if France does not play in it.” France Télévisions, TF1, M6 and Canal+ -- via its free channel C8 -- are all expected to bid for the rights (L’ÉQUIPE, 12/6).
