UAE To Host Women's Int'l Cricket Tournament For First Time

Women's cricket in the UAE is "set to get a big boost" with the Emirates Cricket Board announcing that it will be hosting an int'l tournament for the first time for women, according to K.R. Nayar of GULF NEWS. The tournament is scheduled to start on Dec. 14 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium with seven teams "vying for the title." Some of the pool matches will also be held at the Ajman Cricket Council's Eden Ground with the final scheduled for Dec. 19 at the Sharjah Stadium. The teams competing are Uganda, Kenya, Malaysia, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE. ECB Administrator Mazhar Khan said, "It is important for UAE women's team to play against stronger teams to assess our strengths and qualify for higher level and this tournament will give them the opportunity." Though the UAE as a venue is "popular" in the staging of men's One Day Int'l and Twenty20 Int'l tournaments, an int'l women's tournament has never been hosted there (GULF NEWS, 12/6).
