Media Notes: Germany's Sport1 Renews Rights For FIA World Rally Championship

German free-to-air TV channel Sport1 has renewed its broadcast rights deal for the FIA World Rally Championship. Sport1 secured multi-platform rights for the series in Germany, Austria and Switzerland until the end of the '18 season (Sport1).

The Coral Welsh Grand National from Chepstow on Dec. 27 will mark Channel 4’s final racing broadcast, as the U.K. broadcaster "bows out from the sport following 32 years of coverage." Channel 4 management confirmed that its "4 Racing" program would finish the day after Boxing Day and that 4 Racing "would not broadcast scheduled racing" from Newbury on New Year’s Eve. Detailing its decision not to broadcast racing content on Dec. 31, Channel 4 said that it had found "logistical difficulties" in the handover of third party broadcast equipment to ITV, U.K. racing’s new terrestrial broadcaster, which will begin its coverage on Jan. 1 (SBC NEWS, 12/5).

ManU has become the first Premier League club to make its in-house TV station, MUTV, available for free in China. In a "ground-breaking move, the 24-hour channel is broadcast for free on the Sina Sports platform in the People’s Republic," the only country in the world where MUTV is available without an additional subscription (LONDON TIMES, 12/3).

The AP and Sportradar announced an expansion of their collaboration that will enable Sportradar to distribute AP products such as breaking news, action photos, player headshots and game recaps across 23 sports to its worldwide client base. Sportradar US CRO Tom Masterman said, "The AP will be a premium content offering for our clients around the world." In June, the AP and Sportradar announced a long-term collaboration for Sportradar to deliver core sports data content to AP’s traditional and digital customer platforms (AP).
