Glasgow 2018 European Championships To Retain Eurovision, Atos

Contracts worth more than £10M ($12.7M) are to be awarded to two companies that "will be part of a new European sporting event to be staged in Glasgow," according to Victoria Brenan of the Glasgow EVENING TIMES. The Glasgow 2018 European Championships "will have a potential TV audience" of more than 1 billion across Europe in 35 countries. On Thursday, the city council will be asked to give an £8M ($10.2M) contract to Eurovision Production Coordination to "provide the host broadcast service for the event." The contract requires the host broadcaster to provide a program package "which will include full editorial responsibility for scheduling, audio-visual content and the overall look and feel of the broadcasts." Members of the council's exec committee will also be asked to give a £2.5M ($3M) contract for timing, scoring and results to Atos, an int'l leader in digital services. It is also "intended to appoint the company as the first official sponsor of the Glasgow 2018 European Championships" (EVENING TIMES, 12/5). In Glasgow, Jennifer Russell reported the event will "build on Glasgow and Scotland’s track record of hosting major international events including the 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2014 Ryder Cup and 2015 World Gymnastics Championships." To be staged every four years, the European Championships will "combine the existing European Championships" of athletics, aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon and a new team golf event. The first edition will be held from Aug. 1-12, 2018, in a "unique sporting partnership" between host cities Glasgow and Berlin (GLASGOW LIVE, 12/3).
