Channel Ten Will Fight To Keep Big Bash League Rights As Tournament's Value Soars

Channel Ten "has 15 million reasons to fend off Channel 9 and retain cricket's gold nugget -- the Big Bash League," according to Dean Ritchie of the Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH. Ten is predicting "a whopping" 15 million Australians -- 62% of the nation's 24 million population -- will tune into the BBL’s 35-game tournament which starts on Dec. 20 with the Sydney derby between the Sixers and Thunder. Last season, 14 million Australians watched coverage of the BBL. And the network is also "tipping a rise in the average 1.103 million viewers" who watched each primetime game last year. With interest in the BBL "sky-high," TV sources claim the tournament’s value "would now sit" between A$50M-A$60M ($37.5M-$45M) a season. Channel 10 BBL exec David Barham said, "We are obviously keen to continue on with the Big Bash, for sure. We think we can keep them, we have done a good job." Ten paid just A$20M ($15M) for the BBL rights three years ago. The "network's fresh broadcast has now tripled the BBL's earning capacity" (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 12/5).
