Football Notes: Footballers' Trust To 'Fight For Justice' Over Abuse

Three ex-footballers who came forward to say they were sexually abused as children have called for the sport to back an independent trust that will "fight for justice." The Offside Trust is fronted by former League Two side Crewe Alexandra players Andy Woodward and Steve Walters, and ex-Man City youth player Chris Unsworth. Woodward said, "We have all been through it and we just want justice." A total of 350 people have alleged they are victims and 55 amateur and professional football clubs are "linked to allegations of abuse" (BBC, 12/5).

The Scottish FA has issued a warning to fans after supporters "received an email supposedly from the Scotland Supporters Club" with an invoice for £170 ($216). Current and former members of the Scotland Supporters Club "received the phishing email requesting the money" to be paid by Dec. 7. The incident has "left many of the Tartan Army worried about their data being compromised with thousands of supporters on the mailing list." But the SFA "moved to allay fears that credit card details may have been stolen in the hack." In a statement, the SFA said, "We would like to assure all supporters that no bank or credit card details have been shared" (Scotland DAILY RECORD, 12/5).

The Belgian Jupiler Pro League match between Standard Liege and Charleroi was abandoned on Sunday "after both sets of fans threw objects at opposition goalkeepers." Referee Serge Gumienny stopped the match for the first time in the 58th minute because Standard fans had "hurled small projectiles and a smoke bomb at the Charleroi goalkeeper." The match was restarted, but then abandoned after a "further 10 minutes of play after Charleroi fans threw cigarette lighters and a plastic beer glass at Standard's keeper" (REUTERS, 12/5).

The Hong Kong FA has "played down a request" by Hong Kong Premier League side Kitchee to set up an arbitration tribunal "in the wake of the recent AFC Champions League eligibility saga that involves three Premier League clubs." Board Chair Brian Leung Hung-tak said that they would "investigate the matter before taking any action after champions Eastern were reinstated as one of two Hong Kong representative clubs for the regional top-tier competition." Leung refused to disclose how the investigation would be conducted, but a board member said that they would "form a small group to serve the purpose after a compromise had been made between the parties involved" (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 12/5).
