Former FIFA President Blatter Loses Appeal Of Six-Year Ban From Football

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter has "lost his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport" against his six-year ban from football, according to Matt McGeehan of the London INDEPENDENT. Blatter and former UEFA President Michel Platini were punished in Dec. '15 over a £1.3M "disloyal payment" made to the Frenchman. The pair's suspensions were reduced from eight to six years by a FIFA appeals committee. A CAS statement read, "The appeal of Joseph S. Blatter has been dismissed." CAS said that "Blatter had requested his ban be revoked, not reduced, although the three-person panel determined the sanction was proportionate." The panel, which heard the case on Aug. 26, ruled the payment made to Platini in '11 "breached the FIFA code of ethics as an 'undue gift' and had 'no contractual basis'" (INDEPENDENT, 12/5). REUTERS' Brian Homewood reported that "Swiss prosecutors are now investigating Blatter on suspicion of criminal mismanagement and misappropriation of funds over the payment, which they describe as 'disloyal,' though he has not been charged." And in September, FIFA's Ethics Committee said that "it was investigating Blatter and two other former leading FIFA officials over the salaries and bonuses they had received while in office." Those probes come against a broader background of suspicion over the FIFA Exec Committee's allocation of FIFA's "showpiece event," the World Cup, to Russia and Qatar on Blatter's watch. Swiss authorities are "investigating whether bribes were paid to help secure the hosting rights." Blatter, who must also pay a fine of 50,000 Swiss francs ($49,700), said after the CAS ruling, "I have accepted it now. I have got to the stage where I have struggled enough, I have worked enough" (REUTERS, 12/5).
