Franchise Notes: Man City And Chelsea Expected To Be Charged By FA

Man City and Chelsea are "expected to be charged" by the FA for "failing to control their players" after Sergio Agüero was accused of making a "crazy" challenge on David Luiz that "sparked the ugly scenes at the end of the tempestuous clash at the Etihad Stadium." The FA will review footage of the "mass melee" involving more than 30 players and officials from both sides that broke out in stoppage time of Chelsea’s 3-1 win on Saturday and scrutinize the findings in referee Anthony Taylor’s official report before issuing sanctions. Agüero, Man City’s Argentine striker, will be banned for four games "for a disgraceful challenge" on Chelsea’s Brazilian defender Luiz. Fernandinho is "expected to be banned for three matches for violent conduct" after grabbing Cesc Fabregas by the throat and pushing him over an advertising hoarding after reacting "furiously" to being slapped in the face by the Chelsea midfielder (London TELEGRAPH, 12/4).

League Championship side Preston North End has fined two players sent off for fighting with each other and "will use the money to refund their supporters" who traveled to the match at Sheffield Wednesday. The incident, labeled an "embarrassment" by Manager Simon Grayson, took place in stoppage time. Wednesday was down to 10 men when Preston's Eoin Doyle and Jermaine Beckford "began pushing each other and yelling before being separated" by teammates and opponents. Both were sent off by referee Scott Duncan. Preston will not appeal against the red cards and the money from the players' fines will be used to refund all Preston supporters who made the trip to Hillsborough (REUTERS, 12/5).

Gary Johnson has "dismissed Chelsea's apology" for their response to his complaints of sexual abuse from ex-scout Eddie Heath insisting it is "too little, too late." Chelsea put out a lengthy statement on Saturday admitting regret over the way it had handled Johnson's case when he approached the club in '13 and "apologised profusely" to the 57-year-old. The former Chelsea player "remains unimpressed." Johnson said, "It is too little, too late. Do you think that payment to me really was compensation -- or hush money? I know what I think. Chelsea are finally admitting their guilt. ... I’ve been let down, but so have the other victims. No one from the club has been in touch to say sorry personally" (London EVENING STANDARD, 12/5).

Super League rugby side Leeds Rhinos has placed a £250,000 ($318,400) valuation on James Segeyaro and are "considering legal proceedings over an alleged breach of contract." The club said that it has "engaged legal advisors and are currently considering all legal options available in relation to this matter." Segeyaro, 26, who recently returned to his native Australia, said that "he was homesick and did not want to return" to the U.K. (BBC, 12/5).
