Names In The News

Nine-time Olympic champion USAIN BOLT has won the IAAF male Athlete of the Year award "for a record sixth time." Ethiopia's ALMAZ AYANA, who broke the 10,000m world record by over 14 seconds in winning Olympic Gold in Rio this summer, won the female award. Bolt said, "When you get to be athlete of the year it means that all the hard work has paid off, so if I can win it for a sixth year means as much as the first one." Canada's ANDRE DE GRASSE was named male rising star, and Olympic heptathlon champion NAFISSATOU THIAM won the female award (BBC, 12/2). ... CHRIS WALLER took his stable's career earnings beyond the A$150M ($112M) prize money barrier when REDOUTABLE HEART won the final race at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Waller joins GAI WATERHOUSE and JOHN HAWKES "as the only trainers to prepare the winners" of more than A$150M in stakes in Australian racing history (Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH, 12/4). ... SHANE SUTTON "is on the shortlist of candidates to become Cycling Australia’s high performance director," in charge of the nation’s road and track squads heading into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Sutton resigned from his position as British Cycling technical director in April "after allegations surfaced of sexism and bullying." He is "one of seven people being interviewed for the top Cycling Australia job, with interviews taking place this week" (CYCLING WEEKLY, 12/1). ... Former Argentina national basketball team coach JORGE HUGO CANAVESI passed away aged 96 on Friday, just months after he was an inductee of the ’16 Class of the FIBA Hall of Fame (FIBA).

IN THE CLEAR: A charity set up by Ivorian footballer DIDIER DROGBA to help children in West Africa "has been cleared of fraud and corruption" but may have "misled" donors, Britain's charity watchdog said on Friday. The Charity Commission launched an investigation in April after the London Daily Mail said that less than 1% of £1.7M ($2.2M) donated to the Didier Drogba Foundation "was spent on children in Ivory Coast." The watchdog "found no evidence of fraud or corruption," but said that Drogba's charity "failed to separate its activities" from those of an Africa-based arm of the organization -- La Fondation Didier Drogba (REUTERS, 12/2).
