Ligue 1 Side Montpellier Announces Plans For New Stadium By '22

Ligue 1 side Montpellier President Louis Nicollin and Montpellier Mayor Philippe Saurel on Wednesday “presented the club’s project for a new stadium,” according to Valentin Carpentier of LE FIGARO. The club has been at Mosson stadium since ’74 and a new stadium has been “much needed.” The Mosson stadium is “often flooded because of its proximity to the river of the same name.” Because of flooding and other problems the club has to “routinely travel to Montpellier Hérault Rugby’s Altrad Stadium.” Saurel said, “The Mosson Stadium is now obsolete and has flooded twice. The insurance companies no longer want to cover the stadium and to bring it within compliance of standards is estimated at €47 million ($49.8M). A cost considered too high for a stadium prone to these floods.” The new stadium will be located in southeast Montpellier and will be a part of a “sporting complex with the creation of a new 5,000-seat sports arena for the city’s handball club and the women’s basketball team.” Montpellier’s new stadium, which still does not have a name, will have a capacity of 25,000 with the possibility to hold 30,000. The first steps for the stadium will start in ’17 with "feasibility studies." If approved, construction will start in ’20, with the “hope to be finished in early ‘22” (LE FIGARO, 11/30).
