Investigation Reveals Kenyan Olympic Committee Embezzled Over $870,000

An investigation ordered by the Kenyan Sports Ministry has revealed that large sums of money meant to cover the expenses of Kenya's team at the Rio Olympics "were misappropriated by officials," according to Isaack Omulo of REUTERS. The report said that the money had been "earmarked to buy air tickets for team members, but was instead taken by unidentified ministry officials." The report was compiled by an investigation team led by Paul Ochieng, the dean of students at Nairobi-based Strathmore University. The report said that the National Olympic Committee of Kenya "also diverted money and kit from U.S. sports equipment manufacturer Nike worth millions of shillings." The report said, "Some (sports) ministry officials misappropriated 88,611,480 shillings ($871,190) meant for air tickets. NOCK has been misappropriating Nike contract funds and kit amounting to 126 million shillings per year meant for athletes since 2013." Officials at the Ministry of Sports "did not respond to telephone calls or text messages." Nike "did not return calls seeking comment." Athletes told the investigation committee that "bonuses from Nike for medals won at Olympic and Commonwealth Games did not reach them" (REUTERS, 11/19). XINHUA reported the over $870,000 is "more than triple the amount" said to have been misappropriated by senior NOCK official and Team Kenya Head of Mission Stephen arap Soi, "who is facing five charges" related to the theft of over $254,000 set aside for the team. The probe team was appointed by Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, who received the report on Oct. 28 and "since forwarded it" to Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta. The report recommended, "Action to be taken against those culpable in the misappropriation of 870,000 dollars at Mosca and also Nock to account for the 1.26 million dollars per year they receive from Nike on behalf of the athletes" (XINHUA, 11/19).
