Spanish Superior Sports Council President Announces He Is Stepping Down

Spanish Superior Sports Council (CSD) President Miguel Cardenal announced that he is stepping down from his position, according to Almudena Rivera of MARCA. He said that he had been "thinking about the decision for months," but after Monday's ruling about a complaint filed by former Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) President José Luis Escañuela, "he reflected on the last five years and made the decision public." Cardenal: "I have nearly five years as president. I have attended two Summer Olympics and one Winter Olympics. A new legislature is beginning, this would bring me to be at three more Olympics and it would hardly make sense to extend my tenure for so long. ... I have considered staying longer and finishing some things that are in progress, but I understand that important decisions that are going to affect the whole cycle have to be made." Cardenal "did not reveal his replacement," but said that it will be announced "in the coming weeks." Possibilities include former Madrid Deputy Mayor Manuel Cobo, Community of Madrid Sports Dir Pablo Salazar and former basketball player José Ramón Lete (MARCA, 11/8).
