Analyst Calls Malaysia Southeast Asia's Match-Fixing Hub

Malaysia has "overtaken Singapore as the hub for sports match-fixing in Southeast Asia following a crackdown in the city-state," an int'l conference heard Monday, according to the AFP. Independent industry consultant and former FIFA Security Chief Chris Eaton said, "Malaysia is the epicenter of trade for Southeast Asia." He said that Singapore had managed to "break up some football match-fixing syndicates," although he added some remained working in “close association” with syndicates in Malaysia (AFP, 11/8).

REFUTING CLAIMS: NEW STRAITS TIMES' Teoh Pei Ying reported Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has "refuted claims that Malaysia has overtaken Singapore as the new hub for sports match-fixing in the Southeast Asian region." He said, "I wish to emphasize that the police have not received information on such allegation, either from the Federation of International Association, The Asian Football Confederation, or any other sources." Khalid added that police would "welcome information that shows the sports industry has been tainted, but stressed that such information must be credible and supported by tangible proof" (NST, 11/8).
