Olympic Notes: JTL Head Says Tokyo 2020 Volleyball Arena Construction Should Go Ahead

Alliance of Japan Top Leagues Head Saburo Kawabuchi "called for the construction of the Ariake Arena volleyball venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to go ahead as planned." Ariake Arena is "among a number of new venues that have come under scrutiny by a Games cost review panel" set up by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. Kawabuchi "emphasized the need for a new venue for future sports world and cultural institution activities" (KYODO, 10/26).

The IOC said on Thursday that three Kazakh weightlifters have been stripped of the Gold Medals they won at the 2012 London Olympics "after failing doping tests in the re-analysis of samples." The three were Zulfiya Chinshanlo in the women's 53kg category, Maiya Maneza in the women's 63kg and Svetlana Podobedova, who competed in the 75kg event. They were "among eight athletes disqualified from the Games on Thursday as part of the IOC's re-testing of samples" (REUTERS, 10/27).
