Sydney National Rugby League Clubs To Fight For Center Of Excellence Fund

Up to eight Sydney National Rugby League clubs are "headed for a bunfight over money as they attempt to secure a share" of the A$40M ($30.3M) Center of Excellence fund set aside by the state government as part of the game’s stadium package, according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. Sydney clubs have until Nov. 11 to "express an interest in grabbing a portion of the government booty" to help them fund state-of-the-art training facilities. Six clubs on Thursday confirmed that "they would apply for funding," while it is expected that St. George Illawarra and Canterbury "will also throw their hats in the ring." Only Penrith, which opened its center of excellence earlier this year, is "ineligible." It is understood the state government "will give the clubs an indication of what sort of funding they can expect" after the Nov. 11 deadline. They then have "until the end of March to finalise their applications." The new funding is "designed to bring rugby league clubs in line" with their Australian Football League counterparts. The state government also made it clear it wanted to see New South Wales clubs "dominate the premiership." The funding for centers of excellence is "likely to become even more vital should the NRL press ahead with plans to put a cap on football department spending" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 10/28).
