Australian Football League Considering Twilight Grand Final In 2017

The Australian Football League "may dispense with tradition and play next year’s grand final as a twilight fixture," starting the premiership decider as much as two-and-a-half hours later than usual, according to Denham & Smith of THE AUSTRALIAN. AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said that the league "had not made a decision" on when the '17 grand final -- to be held on the last Saturday in September -- would start. He said that a decision might not be finalized "until early next year and as late as the start of the season proper on March 23." McLachlan: "It’s difficult to think of getting a better grand final than the one we had this year. It’s fair to say some people ask, 'How do you improve on that?'" The AFL does not appear "to be swayed by the guaranteed boost to ratings that an evening grand final would generate." However, it concedes a twilight final "would provide a better overall spectacle, with an enhanced product and entertainment." Before any decision is made to changing the timeslot, AFL execs will consult the league's major stakeholders, including the broadcasters that start a new six-year rights deal next year. The Seven Network declined to comment "but it seems obvious it would welcome a twilight game" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 10/28).
