Football Notes: Spanish Club Says Drawing Real Madrid Like Winning Copa Del Rey

Spanish third division side Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa General Dir Felipe Llamazares said that "drawing Real Madrid was the club’s equivalent of winning the Copa Del Rey." The club is currently first in Segunda B Group 1. Llamazares: "Our goal is winning the league because, honestly, playing Madrid means we've already won the Copa. ... The Real match will gave us a chance to become known, in terms of advertisement and such, and on an emotional level it's amazing that our fans will watch the European champions" (FOOTBALL ESPANA, 10/25).

A study found that Real Madrid on average signs players "at a younger age compared to other clubs in Europe's top five leagues." Madrid has "become famous" for its Galacticos transfer policy, led by President Florentino Pérez. But research from the CIES Football Observatory has shown that its squad members "were recruited at a younger age than those at any other top division club in Spain, England, Germany, France or Italy." Next on the list were Bundesliga sides Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund, with the Premier League's Tottenham "completing the top five." The study found: "Real Madrid squad members were on average recruited at the age of 22.5 years. This is the lowest figure at big-five league level" (ESPN.com, 10/25).
