Tour De Yorkshire Reveals Six Host Towns For Three-Day Event Scheduled For April

The six towns that will host start and finish events during the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire cycle race have been named, according to the BBC. Racing will begin or end in Bradford, Bridlington, Harrogate, Scarborough, Sheffield and Tadcaster in the three-day event from April 28-30. Race organizer Welcome to Yorkshire CEO Gary Verity said, "I'm delighted the race will visit all four corners of the county." This year's Tour de Yorkshire attracted about 2 million spectators. The county's "reputation as a top global cycling venue was cemented earlier this month" with the news that it will host the 2019 Road World Championships -- the "first time the race will have come to Britain in 37 years" (BBC, 10/25). The PA reported Verity told cycling fans "they can start studying Tour de Yorkshire routes for hints as to where the road world championships will take place" in '19. He said, "Every edition of the Tour de Yorkshire now will in essence be dress rehearsals for those races." The routes for '19 "are 90% mapped out, and all races will finish in Harrogate, with starts spread out across all four corners of the county." Verity "had hoped to be naming eight places, not six, but the bid to expand the Tour to four days has again been rebuffed" by British Cycling for '17, "perhaps a missed opportunity" with the '19 announcement "increasing global interest in the race" (PA, 10/25).
