A-League Independence From FFA Seen As Key To Unlocking Sport's Potential

Almost 200 competitions around the world "are run independently," yet the A-League "sits among these lonely, archaic few models run by their national associations," according to David Davutovic of the HERALD SUN. This anomaly and Football Federation Australia’s "lopsided voting structure" were highlighted by FIFA and Asian officials. Club owners "share the world governing body’s view that the game’s key stakeholders -- players, women and clubs -- get a voice." An A-League "independent of FFA’s exclusive, restricting control is inevitable." Professional Footballers Australia CEO John Didulica said, "Shaping the future of the A-League must be driven by knowledge and have a genuine long term vision for the sport. It cannot be political. The migration of the A-League from FFA to independence may well be in the sport’s long term best interests. However, the devil will be in the detail. Autonomy for the A-League cannot weaken the overall sport." Adelaide United Chair Greg Griffin said that expansion and reform "were mutually inclusive" when asked about the introduction of a second Adelaide license. Griffin: "The greatest impediment to attracting new investors and creating new clubs is the existing financial model. Until that’s seriously addressed, then the people that you want to become involved in funding and creating new clubs will simply not invest" (HERALD SUN, 10/24).
