Victorian Government, Tabcorp Backing $97M Redevelopment At Flemington Racecourse

The home of the Melbourne Cup will receive a A$128M ($97.3M) "facelift" after the Victorian government and gaming group Tabcorp were revealed on Monday "as the new backers of Flemington racecourse’s new Club Stand," according to Richard Ferguson of THE AUSTRALIAN. Global builder Multiplex "won the contract for the new development," which is set to replace the 92-year-old existing Club Stand by Cup Day 2018. The state government will contribute A$10M ($7.6M) toward the project. Victorian Racing Minister Martin Pakula said that the A$388M ($295M) generated each year by the Melbourne Cup and the 338 jobs that would be created by the construction "led to the decision to pitch in." Tabcorp and industry body Racing Victoria will "contribute an undisclosed amount" toward the new grandstand. The new stand will "offer prime views of the track from the dining area" -- spectators now have to leave their food to watch the race -- and the Members Lawn will also be enlarged (THE AUSTRALIAN, 10/25).
