European Professional Football Leagues To End Fixture-Clash Agreement With UEFA

The umbrella organization representing European professional leagues (EPFL) said that it will "break off an agreement with UEFA which ensures that European and domestic fixtures do not clash," according to Brian Homewood of REUTERS. EPFL Chair Lars-Christer Olsson said that the organization has been left with "no option but to end the memorandum of understanding" after UEFA announced changes to the Champions League in August. At present, domestic leagues avoid organizing matches "on days which UEFA has allocated to European competition." The EPFL said that "this will now end in March next year." The changes will take effect from the '18-19 season with critics saying that UEFA had "moved a stop closer to creating a closed Super League for the biggest clubs." EPFL board member and Danish League Chair Claus Thomsen said, "We would like to see a preservation of the basic values of European football which is based on sporting merit" (REUTERS, 10/21). The BBC reported the EPFL was "angry that they were left out of talks about the alterations." UEFA said that it "acknowledges" the decision taken by the EPFL, but "had no further comment at this time" (BBC, 10/21).
