AFL Resists TV Money Temptation, Keeps Grand Final Kickoff At 2:30pm

The Australian Football League will "resist the temptation to flirt with a twilight Grand Final next year despite strong advocates for a later start on the AFL Commission," according to Jon Ralph of the HERALD SUN. It is understood the league will again start the Grand Final at 2:30pm when it releases the fixture on Thursday. AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan "threw up the possibility of a 2016 twilight Grand Final early this year before the commission discussed the prospect at length." McLachlan admitted earlier this year that the AFL Commission was "split on the prospects of a later start to the Grand Final." He said, "It was an evenly split conversation. Probably half in the room were very keen for it to stay where it is and half wanted to have a look at twilight." This year’s finals series "featured soaring TV ratings and strong attendances, but TV networks believe more northern states viewers would watch a twilight Grand Final." McLachlan said in March that the league was "only interested in the best product, not maximising TV riches from the Grand Final." He said, "Money is irrelevant. It is (about) creating the best possible sporting event for our supporters and clearly there are aspects to twilight or night that mean the broader event could be better and on the other side of the fence our game is one of the oldest competitions in the world and has been played at 2:30pm on Saturday for a long time" (HERALD SUN, 10/23).
