IOC To Examine Controversial Painkiller Tramadol At Sports Medicine Conference

Controversial painkiller tramadol will "top the agenda" at a sports medicine conference hosted by the IOC next month, with "calls growing for it to be banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency," according to the London TELEGRAPH. The narcotic-like drug is used to treat moderate to severe pain but "has become popular with some cyclists, who take it to numb pain in their legs towards the end of a race." But tramadol, which has been in the news recently "following claims of its use by British Cycling and Team Sky riders, has been blamed for causing crashes, as dizziness and drowsiness are among its side effects." British Cycling and Team Sky have "denied any wrongdoing." Former Cannondale-Drapac team doctor Prentice Steffen, who just retired from professional cycling after 25 years, "was one of the first to raise the issue of tramadol abuse." Steffen said, "It can be an effective painkiller -- you get the numb, without the buzz. But it became clear to me, and other team doctors, that it was being abused and team managers were asking if it could be the reason we seemed to be having more crashes" (TELEGRAPH, 10/19).
