Plans For '17 Women's Super League 50-Over Event Put On Hold

The planned expansion of the Women's Super League to include a 50-over event "will not take place" in '17, according to Stephan Shemilt of the BBC. The inaugural 20-over tournament last summer, won by Southern Vipers, "was widely seen as a success." After a consultation with the six teams involved, the England & Wales Cricket Board "decided to focus resources on developing the T20 version." ECB Women's Cricket Dir Clare Connor said, "It had been our intention to introduce a 50-over version of the Super League in 2017, but the success of the first edition of the T20 competition has given us a new lens to reassess this" (BBC, 10/12).
