Discovery Agrees To Olympics Sublicense Deal No. 12 With Belarus Public Broadcaster

Discovery Communications on Wednesday agreed to its latest Olympic sublicense deal, this time with Belarus National State Broadcasting. The agreement provides the public broadcaster with media rights to the upcoming 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games and 2020 Tokyo Summer Games in the Eastern European country. Belarus National State Broadcasting secured exclusive free-to-air TV rights and non-exclusive radio rights for both Olympics. A spokesperson for the company declined to share financial details of the agreement. The public broadcaster will also receive the digital rights to content it is set to air on its linear TV channels. Complete coverage of the Olympics will be available across Belarus on pay-TV channel Eurosport, the pan-European sports network owned by Discovery, as well as through its digital services such as OTT service Eurosport Player. The sublicensing deal with Belarus National State Broadcasting is No. 12 for the U.S. media corporation since acquiring the Olympic rights from '18-24 across 50 European countries and territories in a €1.3B deal with the IOC in June '15. Discovery is also making "strong progress" on the remaining countries and territories with less than 18 months to go until the Opening Ceremony in South Korea, a company spokersperson told SBD Global.
