Permanent GB Sevens Team Talks Start As English, Scottish, Welsh Officials Meet

The success of the Great Britain sevens team in the Rio Olympic Games will lead to formal discussion, "for the first time, about whether a Great Britain sevens squad should become a full-time programme at the expense of the three separate entities of the England, Scotland and Wales sevens teams," according to Owen Slot of the LONDON TIMES. At present, England, Scotland and Wales "all compete separately in the annual HSBC World Sevens Series." However, representatives of the three unions and Ireland will meet on Monday in London "where the agenda has a tabled discussion on whether they amalgamate full time." The three separate teams are "all contracted to compete in the next HSBC series, which begins in Dubai in December." The unions will "discuss the possibility of competing instead as GB" from the start of the '17-18 series. Folding the three teams into one "makes obvious sense from two aspects." First, it "could work financially because, at present, three unions fund three separate programmes, none of which are notably successful." Second, by competing as one squad, "it would give the team a far greater chance of Olympic success" (LONDON TIMES, 9/26).
