'Footy Friday' Holiday Prior To AFL Grand Final To Cost Victorian Economy A$1B

Employers "have warned that a public holiday introduced by the Andrews government" for the day before the Australian Football League grand final will cost the Victorian economy as much as A$1B ($760M), according to Ewin Hannan of THE AUSTRALIAN. Hazeldene’s Chicken on Monday said that the holiday would add A$195,000 ($149,000) to its wages bill as employees "would have to be paid double time and a half on Friday." Following Labor’s commitment at the '14 state election, Friday will be the second grand final eve public holiday. A PricewaterhouseCoopers study found lost production from the holiday would range from A$717M ($547M) to A$898M ($686M) annually. New research by the Australian Industry Group, released on Monday, found 61% of 80 businesses surveyed said that they "intended to close on Friday." They expected, on average, to suffer A$16,000 ($12,200) in lost income. The predicted impact "appears at this stage to be smaller than last year" when 85% of surveyed companies closed and the average revenue loss was A$57,000. Another company, a national and global supplier, said that its "customers expect us to be open and our international customers do not understand the public holiday." This additional holiday "is not good for manufacturing in Australia" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 9/27).
