Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) President MIGUEL DÍAZ ROMÁN and his board signed "a statement expressing their support" for Spanish Superior Sports Council (CSD) President MIGUEL CARDENAL. The statement "completely rejects the content of the complaint" that former RFET President JOSÉ LUIS ESCAÑUELA filed against Cardenal (EFE, 9/25). ... Tributes have been paid to former Wales int'l MEL CHARLES, "who has died at the age of 81." The "versatile and popular player" was part of Wales' 1958 World Cup squad which advanced to the quarterfinals. Officials at the Welsh club said that Charles -- who was the younger brother of former Juventus and Leeds player JOHN CHARLES -- "died peacefully on Saturday." Swansea coach ALAN CURTIS said, "It's a sad, sad loss. Mel was part of a huge sporting family in Swansea. Not only was he highly respected as a footballer, he was a fantastic character who enjoyed life to the full" (PA, 9/25). ... Cycling's "golden couple," LAURA TROTT and JASON KENNY, got married in a private ceremony in Cheshire. The Team GB pair, who boast 10 Olympic Golds between them, "tied the knot on Saturday" (BBC, 9/25).
