Channel 9 Sports Reporters Have 'Enormous' Gender Pay Gap

Channel 9’s female sports broadcasters have "proved they are equal to the blokes in every way," according to Jessica Halloran of the Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH. So it is time "someone told their travel department." When Erin Molan and Yvonne Sampson "fly to footy games you’ll find them in economy class, while their male counterparts such as Andrew Johns, Darren Lockyer, Ray Warren and Phil Gould go business." In fact, all the male on-air commentators "fly business while all the females turn right into economy." Then there is the pay gap, "best summed up as enormous." For a "good part of the past four years" National Rugby League Footy Show co-host Molan was on a wage of about A$100,000 ($76,250) while fellow panelist Beau Ryan’s pay packet hit A$800,000 ($609,975). Molan "renegotiated a new contract last week." A Channel 9 spokesperson said, "People are paid whatever the market determines they're worth." The wage discrepancy at Nine "comes as increasing scrutiny is placed on the difference in pay between male and female staff at all media outlets." It is also understood female sports talent have been expected to work for “free” outside their contracted duties (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 9/24).
