German Public Broadcaster ARD Spends More Than $150M Per Year On Bundesliga Rights

German public broadcaster ARD will pay more than €130M ($146M) annually "to broadcast the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga from '17," according to Jürn Kruse of TAZ. Internal documents show that ARD will pay close to €127.1M ($143M) per year for game highlights over the next four seasons from '17-18 until '20-21. In addition, the public broadcaster shells out €6.73M ($7.6M) annually for the radio rights, which means ARD will spend €133.83M ($150.2M) per season for its rights package. The costs for the TV broadcast consist of a €113M ($127M) licensing fee and €5.78M ($6.5M) in production costs. The pre-tax figure of €118.75M ($133.5M) becomes €127.1M after adding 7% in sales tax. ARD, which is primarily funded by taxpayers, "will continue not to publicly disclose sports rights fee as it could lead to a disadvantage in future negotiations." ARD Sports Dir Axel Balkausky: "As it has been communicated in the past, ARD will not publicly comment on figures because of legal aspects and to remain competitive" (TAZ, 9/21).
