Senior Saudi Arabian football official ABDELLATIF BUKHARI, who spoke of “dirty tactics” at the Saudi football federation, was “suspended from all football activity for a year.” Bukhari was also fined 300,000 riyals ($80,000). He was found culpable of “defamation, abuse, insults, accusation and challenged the integrity and credibility” of the federation (AFP, 9/21). ... Meis Architects Principal & Lead Designer XAN YOUNG was "honored as a Game Changer at the fourth annual conference sponsored by Sports Business Journal/Sports Business Daily." For the past nine years, she has worked with DAN MEIS at various firms, "including now at Meis Architects, a small, independent firm." She is currently designing two European football stadiums (for AS Roma and for Everton FC), "plus renovations at Staples Center and Paul Brown Stadium" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 9/12 issue). ... Premiership side Saracens and England rugby int'l CHRIS ASHTON has been "banned for 13 weeks after being found guilty of biting" Northampton player ALEX WALLER. After a six-hour hearing, "a disciplinary panel found the 29-year-old bit Waller on the arm at a ruck during Saracens' 27-12 Premiership victory at Allianz Park on Saturday." The panel "looked at two counts of biting but dismissed the second charge." Ashton, "who denied both offences," can play again on Dec. 19 (BBC, 9/21). ... Leading medical experts in the field of asthma and allergic rhinitis (hay fever) "have cast doubt" over whether the drug prescribed to BRADLEY WIGGINS ahead of some of the biggest races in his career would actually have aided his performance as many have claimed in recent days. Dr. BRIAN LIPWORTH, of the Scottish Centre for Respiratory Research, said that he believed there was "no scientific reason" why a drug like triamcinolone would be performance-enhancing (London TELEGRAPH, 9/21). ... Turkish club Antalyaspor dropped SAMUEL ETO'O from its squad "until further notice in a row over the striker's comments on social media." Former Cameroon captain Eto'o, 35, wrote on his Instagram account, "Perhaps some people do not feel respect for me because I am black." Eto'o later made a second post denying the criticism was aimed at Antalyaspor Chair ALI SAFAK OZTURK. Ozturk "had criticised Eto'o for his performances earlier in the season." He said at the time, "No player is above the interests of Antalyaspor. Everyone must know their place" (BBC, 9/21). ... The niece of Spanish Football Federation President ÁNGEL MARÍA VILLAR "has been found dead after a botched abduction and ransom attempt, Spain's foreign minister confirmed on Tuesday." MARÍA VILLAR GALAZ, 36, "was kidnapped on Sept. 13 and was forced to withdraw money from bank machines and demand money from her family to ensure her release." Galaz's husband and cousin "travelled to Mexico along with two Spanish police officers to try to secure her release but her body was then identified at a morgue in the central city of Toluca about 60 kilometres (40 miles) southwest of Mexico City" (ESPN.com, 9/21). ... A French tennis player has been suspended for seven months and fined $10,000 "after being found guilty of betting on 220 matches." World No. 164 CONSTANT LESTIENNE "committed the offences between February 2012 and June 2015." The Tennis Integrity Unit said that "none of the matches involved Lestienne, who is yet to win an ATP title." The TIU said that half of the 24-year-old's ban is suspended "on condition of no further offences" (BBC, 9/21).
