Atlético Madrid's Move To New 'La Peineta' Stadium Could Be Delayed

Atlético Madrid "may not be saying goodbye" to the Estadio Vicente Calderón when the current season comes to its close after all, "as the local council cannot ensure" the completion of the club's new home for the next campaign, according to the EFE. Problems of stadium access "have been raised in Madrid City Council and in responding to these issues, it was revealed that a construction end point is not yet forthcoming." Madrid Councilor for Sustainable Urban Development José Manuel Calvo said, "Neither the council nor the club can ensure the completion time because the final approval of that specific modification depends on the Comunidad de Madrid and also any further issues raised over the stadium." In early September, the local authorities approved a modification to the design for the site, which lies on the former Olympic Stadium, "which a municipal group spokesperson stated was a step forward in the club's hopes of moving in next August" (EFE, 9/21). The EP reported Atlético sources said, "We are working with the City Council with one unique scenario: this will be the last year in the Calderón and we will move to La Peineta next season." The sources added that "club execs are in 'permanent contact'" with Calvo. For Atlético, Calvo's remarks "are due to the fact that both the club and the City Council need the approval of the move by the Community of Madrid." A club spokesperson said, "With the Community there is a total consensus, it is a project backed by all parties" (EP, 9/21).
