Football Notes: Atlético President 'Not Optimistic' Transfer Ban Will Be Overturned

Atlético Madrid President Enrique Cerezo is "not optimistic" that the Court of Arbitration for Sport will overturn his club's FIFA transfer ban. FIFA has "already rejected appeals by Atlético and Real Madrid against a one-year transfer ban." Cerezo said, "We have no choice but to acknowledge the [FIFA] ruling and think about our appeal and the possibilities that we think we will have of overturning the decision. I think we have few possibilities of being successful. CAS never works favorable to those who appeal. But we have a good group of lawyers that specialize in this" (ESPN.com, 9/13).

Barcelona risks further punishment from UEFA after "allowing 30,000 pro-independence flags to be waved by supporters" before the Champions League game against Celtic at Camp Nou on Tuesday. The flags, known as esteladas, were handed out by pro-independence groups before the game and have "previously seen the Catalan club fined" by UEFA on two occasions. Barcelona was hit for €30,000 last July after fans waved the flags during the 2015 Champions League final win over Juventus in Berlin. A €40,000 fine followed last October "when the flags were brought to a Champions League group game against Bayer Leverkusen" (ESPN.com, 9/13).

The head of the Cypriot players’ union has accused the Cyprus FA of "intimidation tactics aimed at silencing those who dare to speak out about match-fixing in professional leagues." Spyros Neofitides, who faces a minimum €5,000 ($6,600) fine following the London Guardian’s exposé of "rigged games and illegal betting on the island and who has been referred to a disciplinary committee by the CFA in a case due to be heard on Wednesday," said that the decision was "a reflection of the extraordinary panic the article had unleashed" (London GUARDIAN, 9/13).

The Indonesian Ministry of Youth & Sports has called on the Indonesian FA (PSSI) to "move the venue of its October chairmanship election to Yogyakarta, as it would be a neutral location for all candidates." The national football governing body earlier said that "it had chosen the South Sulawesi city of Makassar to host the upcoming congress to elect new leaders." However, the Sports Ministry "does not consider Makassar as a neutral location," considering that one of the candidates, Erwin Aksa, originates from there (JAKARTA GLOBE, 9/13).
