French Telecom SFR Ready To Invest $17M Per Year For Ligue 1 Naming Rights

In its "quest" for a naming rights partner for Ligue 1, the French Professional Football League (LFP) is “very close to signing a partnership” with French telecom SFR, according to Arnaud Hermant of L’ÉQUIPE. SFR is reportedly “ready to invest” up to €15M ($17M) annually for three years, €45M ($50.5M) in total. The contract is not finalized and “remains on standby” awaiting an agreement from SFR and the LFP. The “hybrid status” of SFR as a telecom and a media outlet, since its launch of a sports channel, has “affected the finalization of the deal.” Current TV broadcasters, principally Canal+, “have not seen the arrival of SFR as beneficial.” Despite the setback, the “approach of SFR demonstrates the attractiveness of Ligue 1” (L’ÉQUIPE, 9/7).
