Names In The News

South Korea national swimming team head coach AHN JONG-TAEK resigned on Wednesday "as police investigate allegations that two male swimmers secretly filmed female members of the squad after installing a spy camera in their locker room" at a training facility in '13. Korean Olympic Committee official PARK SEONG-SU said that Ahn, who was named head coach in '12, "felt responsible for what allegedly happened under his watch," but maintained he and other coaches did not know what went on (AP, 8/31). ... Man City striker SERIO AGUERO has been "allowed an extra 24 hours for his appeal" against an FA charge of violent conduct. The club said that its officials dealing with the paperwork "would be heavily involved on Wednesday with transfer negotiations, so the FA had agreed to an extra day's grace." Man City and Aguero now have until 5pm GMT on Thursday "to decide whether to appeal" (REUTERS, 8/31). ... Czech gymnast VERA CASLAVSKA, her country's "greatest Olympian and a powerful voice in its struggle against Soviet occupation," has died aged 74 of pancreatic cancer. One of only two women to win back-to-back Gold Medals as best all-round gymnast, Caslavska took seven Golds "in all at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo and the 1968 Games in Mexico City." In the latter, "she competed against and beat Soviet athletes just weeks after Warsaw Pact tanks led by the Red Army swept into then Czechoslovakia to put down attempts to reform Communist rule." A "lasting memory of those games is Caslavska's silent protest of bowing her head on the podium when the Soviet anthem played -- echoing the more celebrated image of U.S. sprinter TOMMIE SMITH's Black Power salute in solidarity with African American civil rights" (REUTERS, 8/31). ... VALTTERI BOTTAS has "reportedly signed a two-year extension" with Williams F1. Bottas was "rumored to be in the mix with Renault," but Germany's Auto Bild reported a "deal is done on a new two-year Williams contract." Sources indicate that FELIPE MASSA's deal with Williams "is less likely to be renewed, with McLaren Honda driver JENSON BUTTON considering a return to his first F1 team -- Williams" (AUTO WEEK, 8/30).
