Three Named In Australian Olympic Committee Accreditation Scandal

An Australian Olympic Committee director, a long-serving AOC employee and the Australian team’s "cheerleader-in-chief" in Rio are at the center of an accreditation scandal "that resulted in nine athletes spending the night in a Brazilian police station," according to Chip Le Grand of THE AUSTRALIAN. AOC Dir of National Fundraising, Community Programs & Athlete Services James Edwards, Athlete Services Manager Megan Sissian and beach volleyball champion Natalie Cook "were among four team officials sent home from Rio after athletes were caught trying to enter a basketball match with false passes." The laser printer inside the Australian team "hub" was reportedly used to make counterfeit, coded stickers for athletes "to add to their accreditation passes to gain entry to Olympic events." Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller said that the athletes "were not at fault and tampering with accreditations was an established practice within Australian Olympic teams." AOC spokesperson Mike Tancred "did not respond to questions." Under Brazilian law, tampering with an Olympic accreditation "is an offence punishable by jail" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 9/1).
