Event Notes: Attendance Down For Matchday One Of Checkatrade Trophy

The introduction of U23 academy sides from Premier League and League Championship clubs in a "re-formatted Football League Trophy" sparked preseason "fan anger and calls for a boycott of the games." On Tuesday many fans "stood by that threat, as attendances plummeted across the country." Last year, the average attendance for a first round match was 1,870. By contrast on Tuesday night, "Matchday One" of the group stage under new sponsor Checkatrade "attracted on average a crowd of 1,462 -- a drop of around 20%." The inclusion of the U23 teams and addition of a group stage in the new format "has increased the number of fixtures taking place," which will allow the Football League to claim that, "despite individual matches averaging lower figures than last year, the tournament changes as a whole have increased attendances" (London GUARDIAN, 8/31).

With 2018 World Cup qualifiers starting this week, Syria, which has made it through to the final group stage of Asian Football Confederation qualification, has been informed by the Macau FA that it will not be able to host its "home" matches. On Sept. 6 Syria was due to play its home game against Korea Republic at the Macau Olympic Stadium in Macau. Syria plays all its matches outside of the country "because of the obvious dangers imposed by the conflict." Local Macau press is reporting "the threat of terrorism as the reason for pulling out of acting as hosts" (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 8/31).
