A retired ex-England rugby player "chased off three intruders, including one with a gun, by throwing a mug of hot tea in their faces" and "tackling" them in Malta. JOHN RANSON, a 78-year-old who played for England in the '60s, was coming into his garage at 6:45am with a morning brew when he "spotted three intruders." RUUD GULLIT is "no longer going to assist DANNY BLIND with coaching Netherlands national team as he traded words on Friday" with the Dutch FA (KNVB) over his job demands. KNVB Technical Dir HANS VAN BREUKELEN said that after a verbal agreement to take up the post, Gullit "has not been given the job because he wanted to take over the team once Blind's tenure ended." Gullet "denied that was one of the reasons why negotiations broke down." He said, "What van Breukelen says is not true. I asked the association to give me a paper to guarantee that once Blind leaves I can renegotiate my position. Van Breukelen said that was logical but refused to put it in my contract" (REUTERS, 8/26). ... Belgian int'l and ManU player MAROUANE FELLAINI "rushed to the aid of a supporter who was crushed against the advertising board" during the celebrations of MARCUS RASHFORD's late winning goal against Hull City at the KCom Stadium on Saturday. Rashford’s strike "prompted a number of away supporters to surge" toward the ManU players but Fellaini "quickly noticed that a woman, who was clearly in distress, had been caught up in the melee and he broke off from the celebrations" (GUARDIAN, 8/28). ... Three terrorists, who were allegedly involved in the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in '09, "were killed in a police encounter in Lahore on Sunday." According to the Counter Terrorism Department, "local authorities had received information regarding terrorists hiding in a building in Lahore’s Manawan area." As police entered the area, "they were ambushed by seven terrorists resulting in an hour-and-and-a-half long gun battle."
