Executive Transactions

MANUEL PELLEGRINI has been named the new head coach of Chinese Super League side Hebei China Fortune, "taking over from ex-Everton midfielder LI TIE." Pellegrini, who won the Premier League title in '14 with Man City before being replaced by PEP GUARDIOLA at the end of last season, "will take charge of a squad that features EZEQUIEL LAVEZZI, GAEL KAKUTA and GERVINHO, and until recently, was challenging for a place in the top three in the league." Pellegrini's first game in charge "will be against defending champions" and CSL leader Guangzhou Evergrande on Sept. 10 (ESPN.com, 8/27). ... Nigerian national football team Manager SAMSON SIASIA "quit Nigerian football" after leading the Super Eagles to Bronze at the Olympic Games, blaming a "disrespectful system," among a number of other problems. Siasia, who also won a Silver Medal at the 2008 Beijing Games, said that his decision "was affected by unpaid wages and a lack of appreciation for his work." Siasia: "I have reached that point where I have to say I have had enough" (ESPN.com, 8/28). ... Former France int'l THIERRY HENRY "is to become an assistant" to new Belgium Manager ROBERTO MARTÍNEZ. Henry "will be part of the backroom staff alongside GRAEME JONES, who was Martínez’s assistant at Swansea, Wigan and Everton." Martínez said, "Thierry brings something completely different. He’s someone who has been in the situation of having to develop a mentality in a team of chasing the dream of winning something special for his country" (London GUARDIAN, 8/26).
