Olympic Notes: Tokyo 2020 Adds Panasonic As Paralympic Gold Partner

The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee announced Panasonic Corp. as a Paralympic Gold Partner in the category "Audio-Visual Equipment, Home Appliances, Electric Bicycles, Care Products as well as the Power Assist Suit." The addition of Panasonic brings the total number of partners to 44 (Tokyo 2020).

SCOTTISH PARADE: An "emergency motion calling" for an Olympic homecoming bus parade to be held in Edinburgh "has been unanimously backed by councillors." Sportscotland last week "unveiled plans for a homecoming celebration to be held next month at Oriam, the country’s new sports performance centre." But the proposal "sparked an outcry after it emerged the event would be held in the centre’s 400-capacity main hall, meaning most members of the public will not be able to attend" (SCOTSMAN, 8/25).

OLYMPIC BRIEFS ...
The Kenyan Government has "disbanded the country's Olympics organising committee and ordered an urgent probe into its shambolic handling of Rio 2016." Kenya's team captain, who is also an MP, "took to Twitter on Thursday in exasperation at the treatment of his fellow athletes, the most successful African team at the Games." Wesley Korir, a marathon runner, said that athletes were "forced to move into shanty accommodation after the official Olympic Village closed." He said that the NOC decided to "leave the athletes in Rio an extra four days after the end of the Games" because they went online to "look for cheap flights" (London INDEPENDENT, 8/25).

Russia will reportedly "award each of its medallists at this year’s Olympics Games in Rio a BMW sports utility vehicle" and at least 1.7M roubles ($26,280). Russia "placed fourth in the overall medal count at the Games" with a total of 56 -- 19 Gold, 18 Silver and 19 Bronze. Gold Medal winners will get 4M roubles ($61,835) and a BMW X6, which sells new in Moscow for about 4.5M roubles ($70,000) (AAP, 8/25).
