Team GB Cycling Medalists Want Controversial Technical Dir Shane Sutton Back

Two of Britain’s Olympic Gold Medal heroes have "joined the chorus calling for the return of Shane Sutton, the coach who faces accusations of sexism and making derogatory remarks about Paralympic cyclists," according to Kevin Eason of the LONDON TIMES. Ed Clancy and Owain Doull, two of the four-man team pursuit squad that included Bradley Wiggins and Steven Burke, said that the Team GB cycling squad’s results from the Rio de Janeiro Games "vindicated Sutton’s controversial methods." Doull said that “tough love is a good way to describe it,” while Clancy "credited Sutton with supporting him through a career-threatening injury" to bring him into the team to win a third Olympic Gold. Sutton faces an independent inquiry into allegations made by Jess Varnish, a former European Gold Medalist, who claimed the British Cycling technical director told her “to go and have a baby” as she was dropped from the Team GB squad for Rio. Sutton resigned in April when further accusations emerged that he had called Paralympic cyclists “wobblies” and “gimps.” The 59-year-old Australian "denies all allegations." Wiggins had "led the call for Sutton to return and he was backed up by his team pursuit colleagues," who recognized Sutton’s "abrasive manner" but said that the results in Rio "spoke volumes for his ability as technical director." Clancy said, "Shane laid the foundations for what happened in Rio. Should Shane be recognized for what happened in Rio? For sure, yes. It is right that this inquiry into sexism and other claims are sorted out. I have had my own issues with Shane and I suppose you love him or you hate him" (LONDON TIMES, 8/25).
