Football Notes: Uruguayan FA Accepts Players' Proposal, Approves Of Nike Contract

After Uruguayan footballers "published a statement asking for the democratization of football, the Uruguayan FA (AUF) approved a contract with Nike." The AUF "listened to the public demand by the national team players and signed a pre-contract with Nike for sponsorship of the team's shirts." The decision was made by the AUF's Assembly of Clubs, which approved of the measure by a vote of 10-9 (GOAL, 8/23).

PRESIDENTIAL PROMISES: Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Ángel María Villar has "promised democracy and transparency" if he is elected as president of UEFA next month. Villar's manifesto for his bid was published on the RFEF website on Tuesday and "was based on three pillars." The first was "the evolution and protection of our organisation towards the best practices of good governance, transparency and democratic participation." The others were the development and promotion of football around Europe "guaranteeing equal opportunities for everyone," and the "protection of the game and the players" (REUTERS, 8/23).

FINAL CHALLENGE: Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter will "mount his final challenge against his six-year FIFA ban on Thursday, following more than a year of scandal that saw him thrown out of football in disgrace." Blatter has appealed to CAS "seeking to overturn a suspension" imposed by FIFA. Although his prospects for an "outright victory would appear to be remote," Blatter said, "I'm very confident" (AFP, 8/24).

FOOTBALL BRIEFS ...
The Asian Football Confederation and the All India Football Federation are "to set up a task force" to ponder the roadmap for Indian football. This was after the officials from AFC, AIFF and IMG-Reliance, which serves as the marketing and commercial partners of the Indian FA, met at the AFC HQ in Kula Lumpur, Malaysia. The joint task force is "scheduled to meet in Goa" on Sept. 27 (GOAL, 8/23).

Serie A side Juventus Sporting Dir Beppe Marotta spoke out "against the new rules imposing a minimum number of Italian players in Serie A." As of this season, all teams in the Italian championship "will have to present a list of 25 eligible players, which must include four home-grown players from the youth squad, and four that have already played in Serie A for a minimum number of years." The rule was "specifically introduced to help cultivate local talent." Marotta said, "This is a rule that works against spectacle. We're attempting to reboot our championship, but then rules like these are applied. It's senseless" (FOOTBALL ITALIA, 8/24).

FIFA's Ethics Committee opened "formal adjudicatory proceedings against three disgraced former African football officials." Former South African FA President Kirsten Nematandani, former Zimbabwe FA official Jonathan Musavengana and former Togo Manager Banna Tchanile "could all face sanctions following an investigation" by FIFA. All three were "investigated over allegations that they breached FIFA's ethics code with their involvement in friendly matches" in South Africa in '10 (YAHOO, 8/24).
